Ligation, Ligation, Ligation

4th November 2017 0 comments Article Phillipines Blog

This morning we had an outside surgeon come in with his team and they performed ligations free of charge (tubes tied).

We were able to stand in and watch some of them; we had 12 women in total come in – they ranged from having 2 children to having 8! They did a tiny cut, probably about half the length of my finger and the surgeon used a long metal rod that was slightly curved to located the fallopian tubes. He then pulled them out the body and checked they were definitely the tubes and the clamped them and quite literally tied them with surgical wire into a loop and cut out a portion! It was a very simple and quick procedure, he did the first five in just over 2 hours. When I did my week work experience at Warwick hospital, I watched a C-Section and so it was interesting to see the comparisons between surgery here and in England. It was essentially the same but obviously different in that they didn’t take place in a surgical theatre, and we didn’t have to wear sterile scrubs while in there (except the surgeons of course). After this the women had to wait and have their vitals taken and they were allowed to leave about 30 minutes after their procedure was finished! We gave free lunch of rice porridge type thing, but I can’t remember the proper name.

Once lunch was finished I went upstairs as I had to pack! Went out this evening and have church tomorrow morning so I had to pack in advance which is sad but exciting at the same time.

This evening I was with some British people and we had a BBQ and fireworks in the rain – just like home! Was so much fun and there was loads of young kids there which reminded me so much of me and my siblings/cousins when we were younger.

these were chinese sparklers – they literally dropped hot ash everywhere and I have little red marks all over my feet

ps. for those who asked yesterday this is a jeepney
